Tik Tok is a Chinese social media app owned by the Byte Dance internet technology company based in Beijing and founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming.
At the beginning the app was called Musical.ly, then Byte Dance took it over and it became Tik Tok which is now a social media platform that allows its users to create and share 15 to 60 seconds long videos on any topic, usually lip-syncing, memes or dances.
Since it was launched, Tik Tok has become popular worldwide and the number of users keeps growing. In october 2018 it was the most downloaded video app in the App Store and in 2019 it hit 1 billion downloads on a global level, being the 7th most used app of the decade. Tik Tok users can create different video content which can include dances, challenges or funny stories that often feature music in the background. These short videos can be also edited: sped up, slowed down or added filters.The background music can be chosen from a variety of music genres from the app. Besides this, Tik Tok shows its users recommended videos on their “for you page”, which are based on what they usually watch, like and share and that way they are also updated on the latest trends and can get inspired too.
Despite being a global app, tik tok has actually a localised content. It usually runs local challenges and contests and trends through the use of hashtags.This helps the app to generate viral content for specific areas.
